Preparation for digestive exploration
Endoscopy is a medical exploration technique that allows visualizing the inside of ducts or cavities inaccessible to the naked eye, by introducing a device (equipped with a camera). It can be used to establish a diagnosis or to treat a pathology. Endoscopy is a global term that defines the observation of organs.
The study of the digestive system involves very specific endoscopic examinations: gastroscopy (esophagus and stomach), colonoscopy (colon) and enteroscopy (small intestine).
The examinations are performed by a gastroenterologist (specialist in the digestive system) or a proctologist (specialist in the anus and rectum). They require following procedures to facilitate the examination, both for the doctor and the patient.
These procedures vary depending on the examination to be performed:
– Establish a complete preoperative blood test (normally prescribed by the doctor)
– Fast for 4 to 6 hours before the examination (do not drink, do not eat, do not smoke)
– Remove all prostheses
– If necessary, take the premedication treatment, making sure to urinate beforehand
As part of a colonoscopy, additional procedures must be taken into account:
– Consult an anesthesiologist, the examination being carried out under general anesthesia
– Adapt your diet by avoiding foods rich in fiber
– The day before, drink the medicinal solution intended to purge the colon
